What the trend looks like
Every Closed on Sunday AI clip uses the same shot. One figure stands in the centre with a calm, closed-mouth stare. Around them, rows of singers sway, clap and lift their hands to the sky while the camera slowly pushes in. The joke is the contrast: hundreds of people lost in the song, and one person who does not move at all.
Creators then swap the two parts. The person in the middle becomes themselves, a friend, a kitten or a dog. The choir becomes cats, skeletons, pumpkin heads, grandmas or anything else. The song stays the same.

Where the shot comes from
“Closed on Sunday” is the fourth track on Jesus Is King, Kanye West’s ninth studio album, released on October 25, 2019 by GOOD Music and Def Jam. It was produced by West, Angel Lopez, Brian “AllDay” Miller, Federico Vindver and Timbaland, and it is built on a sample of “Martín Fierro” (1970) by Grupo Vocal Argentino. The song runs 2 minutes 32 seconds.
The music video came out on Thanksgiving, November 28, 2019, the same day the song was released as the album’s second single. Jake Schreier directed it on West’s ranch in Cody, Wyoming. It opens with West, Kim Kardashian and their four children resting in a rock formation, then family and the Sunday Service Choir arrive in a convoy of armored vehicles. Near the end West stands alone on a rocky outcrop, kneels and raises his hand while the choir surrounds him and sings the last lines. That ending is the scene the AI trend copies.

Why the format spread
- •It needs one input. A single selfie or pet photo is enough, so anyone can join in a few minutes.
- •The joke reads without words. Stillness in the middle of a moving crowd works with the sound on or off.
- •It is endlessly swappable. Change the person, change the choir, and you have a new post with the same sound.
- •The sound is recognisable. The choir ending of a Billboard Hot 100 song gives the clip an instant hook.
Popular versions of the trend
The classic version keeps the robed choir on a sunny hill: see the Closed on Sunday choir AI generator. Pet owners put a cat or dog in the middle of a choir of animals: see the pet choir page. In October the Halloween choir with skeletons, friendly zombies and pumpkin heads is the seasonal twist.
